Ellen DeGeneres gifts Heidi Klum life preserver hat for 40 birthday (Video)

Ellen DeGeneres opted to go practical when it came to giving Americas Got Talent judge Heidi Klum a birthday gift for her upcoming 40th birthday. The talk show host presented Klum a red hat made out of a life preserver, seaweed and netting with Super Mom written on the front.

People reports that the gift inspiration came from after Klums son Henry and two nannies were caught in strong tides earlier this month in Hawaii. Klum and boyfriend Martin Kristen rushed to save the three from drowning, thankfully all made out safely.

Klum and singer Seal separated in January 2012 and announced their plans to divorce shortly thereafter.

Now, her nanny is throwing her a hat party in celebration of her birthday, and DeGeneres has made her well prepared with a hat in honor of her heroism.

Klum explained the theme saying, Everyone has to show up in a hat. So it's all girlfriends of mine and everyone has to wear a crazy hat. So we're all going to sit around with some great hats on, which I think is fun."

DeGeneres joked of her gift, "You can actually save people. You take it off and throw it."

"I'm going to wear this with my red, new bathing suit, Klum replied.
