Jen's World: Channeling my inner Heidi Klum
While I like a well-fitting pair of jeans, and Im a sucker for shoes, Ive never been one of those women up on the latest trends. (Case in point: A quick Google search just told me that peplums are hot this fall, and I havent the slightest idea what they are.)
This, perhaps, says it best: When I accepted the assistant editor job at Rochester Magazine two year ago and then found out that there was a dress code, I seriously reconsidered. (No jeans? What do you wear?)
But that doesnt mean I dont appreciate great clothing and accessories and the people who do them best. Which is why, last year, I joined a group of friends to take in Rochesters annual Style on the Plaza fashion show. Put on by the Rochester Downtown Alliance, the high-tech, high-energy, uber-professional show features the hottest fashions from downtown stores.
Its like, I imagine, attending a big-city fashion show without having to hop a plane and put up with Victoria Beckhams giant hat in your face all night.
If she still wears hats. I dont know.
So, when Nood Reynolds, Rochester Magazine style editor and Style on the Plaza fashion coordinator, asked me to announce this years fashion show held Thursday night in the Peace Plaza I was all over that.
That night, in my favorite black boots (because if theres any right time to pull them out, this is it), I sit on Rocco Altobellis Peace Plaza hair-and-makeup stage, where I get a fancy braid and lipstick so bright Id have never dared it on my own.
Sufficiently fancied, I track down Nood and find her backstage surrounded by the dozen other people who have tracked her down.
How do you pronounce this name? I ask, pointing at the script.
She tells me.
The DJ asks her a question. She answers.
And do I say this part during the introduction? I ask.
She tells me.
An intern announces that Noods needed at the sound booth.
And do I say this at the end? I ask.
She glances at m! y list. No, cross that name off and write in this one
And then its time. Maybe its the glass of champagne I had, but even though the plaza is packed, even though I just got the final script that morning, even though there are still models dressing, I feel like were all going to go with the flow here.
And we do.
Noods on her headset, being the pro she is. Send Morgan, she says. Send Abby. Send Nick. Send Lucas.
When a model misses his place in the lineup, she manages it without a hint of panic, directing the people on the headset and me at the same time. The DJ plays. The models strut. I dont drop the script during the introduction. Its an A-plus night. Cant wait til the next one.

'Apple Amnesty and Absolution'
If youre looking for something fun to do this weekend, join me at Assisi Heights' Apple Amnesty and Absolution this Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The whimsical event recognizes the decades of petty thieves who raided Assisi Heights apple trees for the sweet fruit. The Sisters of Assisi are now inviting these apple thieves and anyone else who wants to share in the festivities for absolution and the bounties of an apple fest, including entertainment, dessert and a few surprises planned by the culprits themselves.
Ill be baking a couple of pies for the fests pie auction and competition. And, frankly, I could use a leg up. While I can craft a melt-in-your-mouth peanut-butter cookie, pies rarely grace my oven. Plus, rumor has it that one of the celebrity pie judges is Post-Bulletin publisher Randy Chapman. If theres someone I should be impressing, its probably him. So if youre willing to share your apple pie secrets, email me at jkoski@rochestermagazine.com and fast!
Apple Amnesty and Absolution is free, though donations are accepted and reservations are required.
